Extrication training

Members of Somerset Fire & Rescue practiced some more advanced vehicle extrication techniques during this drill.  This training concentrated on extrication of vehicles in unusual positions.  This drill required the use of advanced stabilization to make the vehicles safe for patient removal.  The members focused on scene safety and crew communication as a part of this very successful drill.

MVC with entrapment

Stations 56 and 44 were dispatched to an overturned single vehicle MVC with entrapment on Easton Avenue near Easton North Drive.  Car 56 and Rescue 56 responded with Car 44 and E442.  The driver of the vehicle suffered a medical emergency which caused the accident.  The driver was extricated and died sometime later.  The accident is still under investigation.

MVC with entrapment

Somerset Fire & Rescue and Middlebush Fire were dispatched to a single car MVC overturned with possible entrapment.  Shortly after dispatch, the incident was upgraded to confirmed entrapment of the driver.  Chief 56 (Sudo) and Chief 44 (Cuddy) arrived on scene and found a single vehicle had crossed two lanes of oncoming traffic and rolled at least one time coming to rest on the passenger’s side partially off the roadway.  Rescue 56 crew arrived and performed vehicle stabilization and started the extrication of the seriously injured driver.  Engine 562 and Special Operations Unit 56 arrived a short time after to assist in the extrication.  The driver was removed in approximately 30 minutes and quickly transported to the hospital by Robert Wood Johnson Paramedics and EMS.

Bailout Training

Somerset members practiced bailout recertification training today at Somerset County Fire Academy. This session also introduced our recently certified firefighters to our bailout program.  All members present showed exceptional proficiency and confidence in their bailout skills.  This continued training allows our firefighters to prepare themselves to escape the possibility of a career-ending situation.  Congratulations too all who attended.

MVC with entrapment

Fire District No. 1 companies were dispatched to a single motor vehicle crash with entrapment on Canal Road near Suydam Rd. Car 56, Car 562 and Engine 562 and Rescue 56 found a panel truck partially on it’s side with the driver entrapped. Crews from Rescue 56 and E562 stabilized the vehicle and removed the driver’s door to free the driver. The driver was not seriously hurt, the incident is being investigated by the Franklin Township Police, Traffic Division.

Confined Space Rescue Drill

Fire District No. companies attended the second of four district training events.  Each district company hosts one district drill per year.  This most recent training event was the responsibility of Somerset Fire & Rescue, the topic Confined Space Rescue.  Confined Space Rescue is a very specialized skill and requires the help of all District stations to accomplish.  This year we had special guests in attendance.  Our friends from Community Fire Company (Sta. 25) were a welcome addition to the training.  The drill scenario presented the challenge of performing two separate confined space entries simultaneously. In addition, each entry also consisted of a vertical and horizontal entry component.  The crews performed both rescues with great expedience while maintaining the highest level of rescuer and victim safety.

MVC with entrapment

While operating at a multi-alarm mutual-aid structure fire, Rescue 56 was dispatched to a single car MVC with entrapment.  R56 responded from the fire scene in South Bound Brook.  Thankfully, the vehicle operator was able to exit the vehicle with minor injuries prior to R56 arriving on the scene.  R56 picked up from the MVC and returned to work at the structure fire.
