On September  8-10, 2017 members from Somerset Fire & Rescue, Elizabeth Avenue Fire, Community Fire/Rescue, Franklin Township Office of Fire Prevention and Franklin Park Fire attended a 3 day course on structural collapse training hosted by Somerset Fire at the Somerset Firehouse.  This 3-day class conducted by Safety and Survival Training LLC.  This multi-day training covered the skills to certify the attendees to the awareness and operations level.  All of the members from the different departments worked seamlessly to make this class an enormous success.  We look forward to having S&ST LLC. back soon for future classes.  

Trench rescue class

Training

Station 56 and the Somerville Rescue Squad hosted a three day trench rescue training class by Rescue Products International.  Trench rescue Awareness was the topic for all responders Friday night.  Saturday and Sunday the class was split into two groups.  The first group was for members that have not had previous training.  This group received the trench rescue operations certification.  The second group consisted of members that have operations level training.  The second group worked on more technical scenarios such as deep trenches and “L” trenches. This training earned them the trench technician certification.  Congratulations to all the members from both organizations that participated in this extensive and demanding training.

Multi unit dive drill

Training

Somerset Fire and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Dive Unit trained together at Donaldson Park.  The teams from both units worked together and used this valuable opportunity to home their skills and familiarize themselves with each others operation and equipment.  Somerset Fire and the Prosecutor’s team work together often and used this time to further our relationship.

Boat operations training

Training

Station 56 and The South Bound Brook Fire Department (Sta.55) attended a joint drill on boat operations and water rescue at Donaldson Park.  The drill allowed our members to work closely with the members of Station 55 and familiarize themselves with each others equipment, boats and water rescue operations. Once again a great training opportunity to work with our neighboring departments.

Extrication training

Training

Members of Somerset Fire & Rescue practiced some more advanced vehicle extrication techniques during this drill.  This training concentrated on extrication of vehicles in unusual positions.  This drill required the use of advanced stabilization to make the vehicles safe for patient removal.  The members focused on scene safety and crew communication as a part of this very successful drill.

Bailout Training

Training

Somerset members practiced bailout recertification training today at Somerset County Fire Academy. This session also introduced our recently certified firefighters to our bailout program.  All members present showed exceptional proficiency and confidence in their bailout skills.  This continued training allows our firefighters to prepare themselves to escape the possibility of a career-ending situation.  Congratulations too all who attended.

Confined Space Rescue Drill

Training

Fire District No. companies attended the second of four district training events.  Each district company hosts one district drill per year.  This most recent training event was the responsibility of Somerset Fire & Rescue, the topic Confined Space Rescue.  Confined Space Rescue is a very specialized skill and requires the help of all District stations to accomplish.  This year we had special guests in attendance.  Our friends from Community Fire Company (Sta. 25) were a welcome addition to the training.  The drill scenario presented the challenge of performing two separate confined space entries simultaneously. In addition, each entry also consisted of a vertical and horizontal entry component.  The crews performed both rescues with great expedience while maintaining the highest level of rescuer and victim safety.
